LIHEAP Cash Benefits: What You Can Receive

Crisis Benefits: Additional Support in Emergencies
If you face a heating emergency—such as broken heating equipment, lack of fuel, or utility service termination—you may qualify for LIHEAP crisis grants. These grants range from $25 to $1,000 per season, depending on the severity of the crisis. Households can apply for multiple crisis grants within the same season, up to the $1,000 maximum.
How to Apply for LIHEAP

- Online: Use the COMPASS system to submit your application electronically.
- By Mail or In-Person: Download a paper application, fill it out, and return it to your local County Assistance Office (CAO).
When applying, provide a recent heating bill and proof of income for all household members. After submission, expect a written notice regarding your eligibility and benefit amount within 30 days.
